We are grateful to everyone who has so far completed our survey on Training and Development for those involved in Planning - the response has been great. But there is still just over 24 hours until the survey closes if you want to join in.
It will take less than 5 minutes, will help us to provide an even better training service, and you could win a free place on one of TRA's one-day events in 2011 for yourself or one of your colleagues.
Take our survey now. Your responses will remain confidential. Survey closes at 5pm on Friday 17 December 2010.Back to top
We would like to wish all our ENews readers a very Merry Christmas and a happy and successful New Year. We are grateful for all the support we have received during the year and look forward to keeping in touch with you all during 2011.
Rather than circulating a Christmas e-card separately, as we did last year, we have placed it on our website to make it easier for you to access while reading ENews. So, if you haven't already spotted the mini version on our Homepage, you can view your Christmas card here.
If you need to contact TRA over the holiday period, please note that the office will close at 5pm on 23rd December and re-open at 9am on Tuesday 4 January.Back to top
Following the success of our 25th Anniversary Bursaries for Young Planners in 2009 and our Bursaries for Support Staff in 2010, we are delighted to be able to continue with an annual bursary scheme for 2011. We believe this sort of initiative is particularly important at the moment while access to training opportunities is severely restricted for many people.
The latest scheme has been established for the benefit of planning enforcement practitioners and there are 10 free places on TRA's 2011 events up for grabs. TRA has always recognised the crucial role of enforcement in the planning system and has been providing training and development opportunities for enforcement practitioners for over 20 years. The scheme is being run in association with the National Association for Planning Enforcement (NAPE).
Full details of the scheme are available on our website but the key points are:
You can see also feedback from young planners and support staff who have benefited from TRA's previous bursary schemes on our website.Back to top
TRA was recently commissioned to develop a bespoke workshop on Validation for West Lindsey District Council. We are pleased to announce that this is now available for delivery, exclusively on an in-house basis, to all other authorities.
The workshop helps to simplify the validation process by identifying the key elements of the different 'control regimes'; demystifying the legal requirements surrounding validation; and helping participants to understand the complex issues relating to listed buildings and conservation area consents. It also looks at future Government proposals which might affect validation, using relevant case studies to reinforce key points.
The session is delivered by Senior Associate, Vivien Green, who is also the course tutor on TRA's certificated training programme on Planning Enforcement. Participant feedback from the session at West Lindsey was extremely positive:
For a limited time only this session is eligible for a 10% price discount. This discount is only applicable to in-house bookings made before the 31st January 2011 and sessions can be delivered anytime up until the end of December 2011. See our website for a full list of the officer/staff workshops included in this offer.
For more information on the Validation workshop, including an outline programme, please contact Angela Holmes without obligation.Back to top
As mentioned previously, the new TRA Training Workshop Programmes for 2011 are now finalised and available to view on the website. The programmes in both England/Wales and Scotland feature a number of brand new workshops this year, and the first one of these is due to take place in Glasgow on 31 March 2011.
The workshop is entitled Development Management: exploring best practice and is aimed at both experienced planning support staff and newly qualified professional staff. TRA firmly believes that developing the potential of these staff is the key to making sure that Development Management is effective and efficient. The workshop is designed to help these staff members identify potential changes and better understand how such improvements can be made to work successfully, in an effort to to provide a high quality Development Management service, but at a minimum cost.
The workshop will explore the day-to-day practical aspects of a wide range of development processes from pre-application discussions, through consultations, notification procedures and decision notices, and finally onto monitoring requirements. The day will allow participants to examine the way their development management procedures have evolved and are now operating, together with the implications of recent (and proposed) amendments.
Further details are available on the website where you can also download a booking form. Provisional bookings can be made to reserve places by telephoning 01204 385678 or via the on-line provisional bookings facility on the website. Don't forget - booking 2 or more places on this (or any of the workshops in the programme), at the same time, will earn you up to 15% discount!Back to top
