This is an exciting time for Basildon Borough Council.  We are the largest economy in Essex, and second largest within the Thames Gateway, with a base of advanced engineering and finance companies.  The Borough is an increasingly attractive prospect for both skilled workers and families, with a population increase of more than 14% being forecast within the draft Local Plan, a growing number of which will be delivered by our own innovative Sempra Homes company. The Borough itself provides an interesting mix of old and new, the innovative new town and historical Billericay, high density urban areas, and rolling Green Belt and SSSI landscapes.

The Council is undergoing a period of regeneration and renewal with major developments and infrastructure planned for the area.  The Development Control team are supporting the delivery of significant levels of new homes, and related development within the borough.

This is a key role and the successful candidate will manage the process of determining strategic and major planning applications and special projects, as well as supporting the Manager of Development Control in developing and delivering the corporate vision, values and priorities of the Council and the projects for which the post holder is responsible.

The successful candidate will be significantly experienced in major and complex planning applications, including phased development and EIA schemes. The post holder will also be well versed in informal hearings and inquiry appeals and have demonstrable experience of dealing with external bodies and elected members at all levels. The successful candidate will be able to apply their expertise to generate improvements to processes and systems involved in the development management function.
