TRA launched its unique Certificated Course in Planning Enforcement in 1996 and for well over 20 years the course has set the standard for certificated training in this specialist field. In late 2017 the course was re-organised and the format updated to introduce distance learning elements which are undertaken via TRA's own online Learning Portal. These now combine with the more traditional "in-person" Tutorial Session at Madingley Hall to provide a more flexible overall learning experience for students.
Students are required to successfully complete four "modules" in order to be awarded the Certificate and we are delighted to announce that the first batch of students on this new format have recently graduated. 8 students received their Certificates at the end of February. Three of them have kindly offered their feedback on taking part in the course:
- I thoroughly enjoyed the modules, finding them extremely helpful as they progressed, acting as an excellent aid and future guide in my current role. The tutorial sessions were very good, providing a good cross section of opinions and disciplines, especially in the setting of Madingley Hall. The distance learning elements were great and I was able to work from home to complete these. I also found that having to carry out the research yourself meant that I retained the information easier. I was employed in my position as a graded progression and in completing the course and gaining experience within my role I received the pay scale associated with the senior role. Dean Flower - North West Leicestershire DC
- I found all of the modules very informative and it was pitched at the appropriate level for someone like myself and very new into the planning enforcement world. At a rather mature age and not being a university graduate I found some of the distance learning demanding. As a learning tool, overall, I did find this aspect of the course quite beneficial to my day to day role. Overall, I believe the course is an excellent experience for newly appointed enforcement officers to obtain the necessary knowledge to carry out their role. Wayne Bellamy - Stratford-on-Avon DC
- As I had only started in planning enforcement a few months earlier, I found the initial modules very relevant and a good learning aid whilst carrying out the day-to-day job. It was good to see what other local authorities are doing and I was able to benchmark how well we were doing in enforcement. We were also able to discuss various cases and how each LPA dealt with them, which again is valuable information. I was able to apply for a senior post within the team after only 18 months in post which is testimony to the knowledge and skills gained from doing the TRA enforcement course. We are now ensuring all our enforcement team are offered this course when joining the team. Michael Thompson - East Riding of Yorkshire Council
