Writing Effective Policies in the Local Plan
In-House Training

This workshop is aimed at all planning staff involved in writing, editing, monitoring and reviewing policies at local and regional levels. It explores the most effective and practical means of expressing policies within the various elements of the Local Plan. It is clearly crucial to get this right if the policies are to be understood, applied and implemented through development control and other mechanisms. With a practical focus, the workshop covers the process of policy making from initial drafts, through internal and external consultation, changes and editing, to the examination process, and the importance of monitoring and review. Although the content focuses mainly on the local authority’s role in policy making, the workshop will also be useful for those involved in responding to policy consultations. The workshop draws heavily on practical examples, including examples provided by participants, as a means of developing best practice.

Comments From Previous Attendees

I found it really useful. It promoted some really useful practical tips. The presentation was dynamic and thought provoking. The practical exercises were really good and helped me to think about the best way to appraise and write policies. Very good course, good balance between theory and practice.

Well structured and covered all the fundamentals of policy writing. Presented in chronological order which was helpful and logical. Presented in a very informal way, which was conducive to maintaining enthusiasm throughout the day!

As a new policy planner it was an excellent insight into policy writing. I found it particularly useful to look at our current policies and analyse/check them. I enjoyed the workshop and liked the informal format.

As a planner who has limited policy experience and more DM experience I found the course really useful on where to start when writing policies and how to interrogate policies to produce a policy which is more concise and easier to understand by a lay person.
