A Briefing on Planning for Councillors
In-House Training

Our popular general briefing session, aimed especially at Councillors on Planning Committees and Sub Committees, of mixed experience levels.

The workshop covers:

  • the context of planning (Councillors often become very familiar with detailed aspects of the system and very much appreciate an overview)
  • an outline of the legislative framework
  • key aspects of the statutory system in which Councillors are involved, usually focusing on development management and material considerations
  • the role of Councillors in the process, in general terms (we offer a specific session on this topic)
  • "tools for the job" i.e. a few key things Councillors need to handle their Committee roles more effectively.

This course is available in both full and half-day formats.  The full-day session is delivered by two presenters while the shorter half-day session (3 hrs) is delivered by one presenter. Training consists of an interplay of short presenter briefings, short interactive exercises, discussions and question sessions.

The timings for the shorter half-day session can be flexible in either a morning, afternoon or evening.

Our style is structured but informal; we use a variety of techniques, including:

  • presentations, supported by visual aids as appropriate
  • group discussions/exercises
  • question and answer sessions
  • straightforward course documentation.

Drew attention to aspects and angles which I had either forgotten or overlooked. Presentation style was engaging, humorous and particularly flexible. Thank you!
